DO your research. There a lot of factors that go into buying a rug, but it’s easier to become an expert on these factors than you may think. Before you make your final purchasing decision, you want to become familiar with things like price, texture, construction, and fiber. Knowing what each of these factors means for your rug will ensure that you buy exactly what you want and need.

DON’T be afraid to be bold. Area rugs are a great and simple way to bring life to your home. Consider colors and patterns that you don’t see anywhere else in your home. As long as they don’t clash with your existing style, colorful or patterned area rugs can really complete your home’s look.

DO listen to your instincts. This is your rug. It will be in your home. So, unsurprisingly, your opinion should be most important. Let your personal style and existing décor guide you.

DON’T hide your rug. You just put a lot of work into finding a great rug so show it off! If there are parts of your rug that you love don’t cover them with bulky furniture.

DO put a lot of thought into size. One of the biggest mistakes you can make when purchasing a rug is buying the wrong size. The size of your rug conveys the size of your room so getting the wrong area rug can make your room feel tiny and cramped or it can make your room appear too large, leaving it feeling empty.

DON’T forget about your existing décor. Most people understandably shop for a rug based on its appearance. But ultimately, you should select a rug that enhances or at least complements your interior space.

DO maintain your rugs. Vacuum your rug regularly and in the direction of the pile. Clean stains immediately and dry quickly with an absorbent white cloth. Get a professional cleaning regularly to keep your rug in its best shape.

DON’T settle. Take the time to find exactly what you are looking for because it is out there, and in the off chance that it isn’t, consider getting a custom rug.
